    Riding in the Gredos Mountains combines the altitude of the mountains and the alpine valleys (around 4,950 ft.) and swimming in the refreshing and gurgling rivers and in the mountain gorges.


    This is an ideal riding week with full days of riding, diverse landscapes with mountain views and pristine mountain rivers. It is a perfect riding holiday, with fun day rides, long picnic lunches and beautiful pools to swim followed by sunbathing siestas. Each day offers exciting gallops across pastures and open fields.


    The villages display their architecture, their traditions, and the way of life of their people, isolated in this inaccessible nature that shapes their unique character. Enjoy the best riding in this part of Spain and in the early summer months.


    Sierra of Gredos

    Non rider rate:  All rides on this page are appropriate for non riding partners. The fee is 70% of rider rate. Other activities such as cycling, hiking or cultural tours can be organized for a fee.

    Short Break

    Guests ride from hotel to hotel, and at three of the four accommodations the horses are in pastures beside the hotel, allowing clients to watch them grazing and resting directly from their bedroom windows.

Guests enjoy the changing scenery throughout the year—from snow-capped peaks and spring wildflowers to refreshing summer swims in pristine rivers and colorful autumn landscapes.

  • Itinerary

    Standard Itinerary:


    Day 1: Madrid to Navarredonda de Gredos — 3:00 PM transfer from Madrid (2-hour drive) to the Gredos National Parador. Welcome dinner and overnight.


    Day 2: Pinewoods & Summer Pastures — Circular orientation ride from Navarredonda through pine woods and open fields. Paella picnic lunch in the countryside. Optional evening spa session. Overnight at Parador.


    Day 3: Navarredonda to Navalperal de Tormes — Ride along the Tormes River valley. Lunch and swimming at Pozo de las Paredes (Barbellido Gorge). Afternoon ride along cattle paths. Overnight at Hotel Rural Cruz del Gallo.


    Day 4: Navalperal to El Barco de Ávila — Active progressive ride with long trots and canters through Aliseda de Tormes. Afternoon at leisure to relax at the hotel spa or explore the 15th-century walled village of El Barco de Ávila.


    Day 5: El Barco de Ávila to Hoyorredondo — Ride through oak woods and pastures along cattle tracks. Picnic lunch and swim near the 15th-century bridge and castle at Puente del Congosto. Overnight at a rural hotel in Hoyorredondo.


    Day 6: Hoyorredondo to San Martín de la Vega — Canters and gallops through the Corneja River valley. Lunch near water mills, then ascend the Roman road over Puerto de Chía (5,686 ft) for views of the Corneja and Alberche valleys. Short transfer to Barajas de Gredos for overnight.


    Day 7: San Martín de la Vega to Navarredonda — Ride back to the Tormes Valley with panoramic mountain views and long afternoon canters. Farewell dinner and overnight at the Parador.


    Day 8: Navarredonda to Madrid — Breakfast followed by transfer to Madrid, arriving around 12:00 PM.

    Riding Details: Moderate pace, 5–6 hours/day over ~110 miles total.


    Summer Itinerary (July & August departures have a slightly modified itinerary):


    Day 1: Madrid to Navarredonda de Gredos — 3:00 PM transfer from Madrid (2-hour drive) to the Gredos National Parador. Welcome dinner and overnight.


    Day 2: Navarredonda de Gredos — Circular orientation ride through pine woods and fields with expansive mountain views. On-site paella picnic lunch. Optional evening spa session. Overnight at Parador.


    Day 3: Navarredonda to Navalperal de Tormes — Ride through meadows and woods along the Tormes River. Lunch and swimming at Pozo de las Paredes. Afternoon ride along cattle paths with views over Navalperal.


    Day 4: Navalperal to Navarredonda de Gredos — Ride ancient cattle paths to Navacepeda de Tormes. Lunch at a fisherman's hut in Hoyos del Collado with time for a natural pool swim. Return through pine forests to the stables.


    Day 5: Navarredonda to San Martín de la Vega — Climb Cañada del Horno through broom fields for views of the Alberche River Valley. Tavern lunch, then ride toward Barajas de Gredos with mountain views.


    Day 6: Navarredonda to Barbellido Mountain Gorge — Ascend toward Covacha Gorge and down to Barbellido Gorge for lunch and swimming. Ride past Siete Fuentes and Hoyos del Espino pine forest to end the ride.


    Day 7: Navarredonda to Ávila — Drive to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Ávila. Self-guided day at leisure (independent lunch) to explore the medieval walls and Gothic cathedral. Overnight at the 16th-century Parador of Ávila.


    Day 8: Ávila to Madrid — Breakfast followed by transfer to Madrid, arriving around 12:00 PM.

    Riding Details: Moderate pace with slow mountain sections and valley canters.

I was invited by a friend to accompany her on this trip, and I have to say it exceeded all of my expectations. Riding through the Sierra of Gredos was amazing.


Under the stewardship of Maria Elena Dendaluce Arriga we traveled a wide loop through some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen, with abundant wildflowers, majestic vistas and ancient ruins and history to boot. The horses were all of excellent quality, very well behaved and in amazing shape. I think they are part mountain goat given some of the terrain they traveled without pause. The trip was well paced with time to get to know your mount and wonderful accommodations and food throughout.


The trip is best enjoyed, I think, by people with a good level of fitness and solid riding abilities as there are extended trots and canters interspersed each day. Go and enjoy!
